People move in and out of Las Vegas allot, for years Las Vegas has had a net increase in people moving in. I remember in the LVRJ an article about how 7,000 people moved into Nevada every month and about 4,000 moved out every month, that’s still a net increase of 3,000 people per month. With the economy the way it is now I know the numbers are different, but still that’s allot of people. Regarding Health Insurance this poses quite an issue in terms of Individual health insurance as the carriers usually are separate companies from State to State and for the most part the “In Network” portion of health insurance does not transfer across State lines (this depends on the carrier). If a person is healthy, this is not a problem as the person can apply and qualify in the new State. If there are health issues or pre-existing conditions options can be limited. The other issue is when a person is out of State and needs medical services or if a person lives on a State border where a number of providers are officially in another State even if only ten miles away. Let's look at some of these options.
Many people do not realize that their current individual health insurance is based on residency. The average rule is that a person must be in their Residency State for a majority of the year (over 6 months). This can be an issue for someone who splits time between States or moves permanently to another State. Once a person has decided to permanently move to a State such as Nevada and has a resident address, it's best to start the new health insurance process. The underwriting process can take time so it's best to get a jump start. If a person's waits until the last minute, they find they are in Nevada without any coverage in force. Their prior coverage may not have a network in the Nevada? Do not cancel any prior coverage until approved at the plan and rate you want in your new State. At a minimum, you may have emergency care on the old plan.
There are locations along the Nevada/Arizona/California border where health care providers may be just across State line. The same general guidelines above for out of State are a good rule of thumb but some of the major Las Vegas Health Insurance Carriers address this issue by extending networks in such areas. PPO plans with Blue Cross, United Health Care, or Aetna are ideal in this situation.
